How the calculation works

Total cost = hardware + activation + monthly membership × months + annual protection × years. If a company sells a prepaid annual or multi-year plan, divide the plan price by the number of covered months to get an effective monthly rate before entering it here.

Use the amount you would actually pay at checkout, including required activation or setup fees. Promotional hardware discounts can make a tracker look much cheaper in year one while the recurring plan becomes the larger cost over a longer ownership period.

Why subscription structure matters

Pet GPS trackers often rely on cellular connectivity, which makes recurring service a core part of ownership rather than an optional accessory. Comparing only device price can therefore be misleading. A $20 hardware difference matters far less than a several-dollar monthly difference when you keep the tracker for years.

Annual protection plans or replacement programs can also change the picture. Enter them only if you genuinely expect to buy them. If a plan includes hardware replacement, evaluate that separately from the pure dollar total because the value depends on the replacement terms and your risk tolerance.

Cost is not the only decision

Do not let the lower long-term total override coverage quality, battery fit, size, attachment method or notification behavior. A tracker that is frequently uncharged, uncomfortable for the dog or unreliable where your dog roams is poor value even if its subscription is cheaper.

Battery claims deserve particular caution because published maximums usually depend on connectivity, activity and power-saving conditions. Treat them as upper-bound product claims rather than guaranteed real-world intervals. The same applies to network coverage: cellular performance varies by location, so confirm the service model fits the areas where you actually need tracking.

Use the same time horizon

One-year totals are useful for testing a product category. Five-year totals expose recurring-service differences much more clearly. If you expect to replace the hardware sooner, use the shorter comparison as the more relevant decision input rather than assuming every device lasts five years.
