Live view and recorded history are separate features
A camera may offer free live view while placing recorded history behind a subscription. Furbo’s help documentation says standalone models keep core functions such as live view, two-way audio, treat tossing and basic alerts without Furbo Nanny, while advanced cloud features require a plan.
That distinction is critical because many buyers assume that “works without subscription” means useful event history is also free. It may not be.
Local storage avoids a recurring cloud bill
MicroSD or local-base storage can keep recordings in the home and avoid a monthly fee. The tradeoff is that you are responsible for card capacity, device access and what happens if the camera itself is damaged or removed.
Cloud storage survives the camera
Cloud history can remain available even if the physical camera fails, and it can make remote event review easier. It also creates a recurring cost and sends more data off-site. Privacy preferences should therefore be part of the buying decision, not an afterthought.
Use a feature-loss checklist
Before purchasing, write down the functions you need: live view, two-way audio, event clips, continuous recording, person/pet detection, barking or meowing alerts, treat tossing and multi-camera history. Mark which remain after canceling the plan. That prevents a low hardware price from hiding an expensive feature dependency.
