Coverage is the first filter
Fi identifies the cellular network used by each model and explicitly recommends checking coverage around home and other important areas. Tractive also relies on cellular connectivity for live location. If the likely escape route crosses weak coverage, investigate that before buying.
Attachment failure is total failure
A tracker with excellent GPS is useless if it detaches. Evaluate the collar or mount under pulling, brush, fences and normal play. Integrated collar designs and clip-on mounts fail in different ways, so choose around the dog’s environment.
Battery reserve matters more than headline maximum
Do not routinely run the tracker near empty. Escape events are unpredictable, and live tracking uses more power than quiet background operation. Build a charging routine that keeps meaningful reserve rather than stretching every charge to the advertised maximum.
Alert workflow should be simple
The best system is one you understand under stress. Configure safe zones, test notifications and run a practice lost-mode session before you need it. A complex feature you have never tested is not an emergency plan.
